III. Arts Center of NCTU

  1. In its cross-century prospective plan, NCTU put high emphasis on enhancement of the artistic aura of the campus and managed to promote the idea to a number of alumni who afterwards provided great support to finally have the Arts Center of NCTU founded in Sept 2000. Since the inauguration, every year, the superintendent of the Arts Center has organized a series of universally acclaimed exhibitions and performances around a specific theme, in hopes of breathing an artistic aura into the NCTU, which traditionally focuses on education of technology and science so that the teachers and students and the residents of the community may, after their daily work, have a convenient access to the artistic activities to understand and cultivate interests in arts, develop artistic capability for the future inter-disciplinary innovation, and enjoy a rich and diversified spiritual life.
  2. The Foundation has always been working closely with the superintendent of the Arts Center and the Alumni Association of NCTU to strive for support and donation from the alumni and all social circles to fund the expenses for the exhibitions. For more information, please visit the website of the Arts Center of NCTU (http://acc.nctu.edu.tw/).

Since its re-establishment in Hsinchu, NCTU has educated more than 54,000 professionals in science and technology, management and humanities and thousands of industrial leaders and technological experts , who are scattered in the fields of industry, government, academia and research. To inherit the virtue of mutual assistance and carry forth NCTU’s spirit of “being grateful to the spring of the water one has drunk”, the Foundation established the Spring Club as a communication platform in June 2005. By June 2006, the club had developed a membership of seventy one alumni of different batches, and it organizes various communication activities for the alumni to get together on a regular basis and has eminent alumni and social elites from different fields invited to share their successful practical experiences.

V. Exchange plan for elite students across the Strait

  1. Presently, there are five Chiao Tung / Jiao Tong Universities across the strait [NCTU in Hsin-Chu, Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), Xi’an Jiaotong University(XJTU), Southwest JiaoTong University (SWJTU)], which share a common historical background in their origins but have developed their own features in their respective specialized fields. To promote benign development of interactive relationship and lay a foundation for extensive cooperation in future academic research between tese five Universities across the strait, the Foundation organized a cross-strait student exchange program in 2004, inviting ten outstanding students from SJTU and XJTU, who had won the scholarship of the Pan Wen Yuan Foundation (PWYF Scholarship), to pay a short-term academic exchange visit to Taiwan so as to create another communication and exchange channel for the students across the strait to establish a feeling of mutual trust and to promote cross-strait academic, cultural and people exchange.
  2. Since 2006, besides the aforesaid invitation of ten scholarship winners from SJTU and XJTU, the Foundation has also provided flight tickets, board  and lodging subsidies for six PWYF Scholarship winners from NCTU to take a short-term academic exchange visit to the Jiao Tong Universities in Mainland China so as to fulfil the cross-strait exchange of visits.
  3. In the future, the cross-strait student exchange program will be carried out in cooperation with the Office of Student Affairs, NCTU, with the participants selected from those with distinguished performance in the extracurrilar activities so as to stimulate the students to join the activities, which may promote social communication and develop leadership

VI. Organizing seminars and lectures

In the fifty years since its re-establishment, NCTU has educated numerous professionals in science and technology, management and humanities, and nowadays, a large number of its distinguished alumni are scattered in the fields of industry, government, academia and research. The Foundation and the Alumni Association of NCTU have always been playing the roles of bridge and platform for the further development of NCTU and promote the emotional connection between the alumni, and often organize seminars or lectures on attention-getting issues which arise from the processes of social and industrial developments.

  1. .Spring Management Elite Lecture (hereinafter referred to as the Spring Lecture)
The Foundation and the College of Management, NCTU worked together with the civic-minded enterprises to establish this lecture and design a diversity of learning methods for the EMBA course – Innovation and Entrepreneurship, which is comprised of class instruction, lectures and on-site visits of the enterprises. The Spring Lecture invites the industrial elites to share and disseminate their practical entrepreneurial and innovation experiences. By personally participating in the sharing, inheritance and discussion of the business management style and practical experiences of executives in different industries, the students may through case study, acquaint themselves with the entrepreneurial and operation practices, explore their own potential and open up an extensive multi-dimensional horizon to prepare for the current challenges of knowledge value creation age.
  2. Every year, the Foundation organizes or co-organizes with other entities seminars, forums or other activities pertaining to the development of various industries in order to grasp the trends and pulsation of the industries and promote exchange between the professionals in the fields of industry, government, academia and research.

VII. Implementation of the subsequent plan for the “Lottery Philanthropy” project

  1. The Lottery Company, a joint venture founded by Acer Inc. and GTECH Corporation in 2002, was selected to be the technology partner for the first public welfare lottery issued in Taiwan.
  2. Every year, in light of the entrepreneurial philosophy that “what has been taken from the society should be used for the society”, the Lottery Company allocates a portion of its profit to the Lottery Philanthropy Project Foundation, which was established to fund the public welfare activities organized under the tenet of “combining technology and humanity to care for the disadvantaged”. The Lottery Company has carried out many public welfare projects and endeavoured to establish innovative modes of public welfare since 2003 and was conferred the Wenxing Award by the Council for Cultural Affairs, Executive Yuan, in 2004.
  3. After the expiration of the technology cooperation agreement in 2006, the Lottery Company actively searched for a new entity to take over its social responsibilities and continue to nourish the embryo modes of public welfare established, that is, to paint the sound for the hearing disordered persons and to voice the view for the visual impaired persons.
  4. The Foundation has combined NCTU’s technological capacity with the enthusiasm of the faculty and students to carry forth the spirit of philanthropy and contribute, in a joint effort, to promoting public welfare.
  5. Preliminary achievements in 2007
    * Paint the sound – targeting hearing impaired friends
Four hearing impaired painters were invited to paint for celebrating the anniversary of the Cheng Yuen High School; three hearing impaired painters were invited to paint for celebrating the anniversary of the NCTU; four hearing impaired painters were invited to paint for celebrating the 27th anniversary of the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park Administration and recommended to the corporations located in this Park to enhance their popularity and painting income.
    * MP3 audio books for visually impaired persons – targeting visually impaired friends
In light of the upgraded functions of the audio books and the services for recording audio books, the bandwidth of the network had to be increased to facilitate servicing visually impaired friends. The Computer Network Center, NCTU provided the server and academic network to solve the issues of insufficient bandwidth and deficient funds for purchase of equipments.
    * Affairs concerning the website of the Cancer Hope Association
The Cancer Hope Association is another entity which the Lottery Philanthropy Project
used to sponsor. Its original mail service and website were all set up with assistance
from the Computer Network Center, NCTU, which provided the server and academic
network to solve the issue of deficiency in hardware to meet the demands for
    business expansion.

VIII. Comprehensive business

  1. To support the College of Management to publish the Management Review
The NCTU Management Review (the Review), which was established by the College of Management in 1981, is a scholarly periodical for the management academia where any local or foreign theses in management science may become the subjects of an issue of the Review. The Review is published semi-annually in June and December and has always followed the external examination principle with each contribution thereto subject to review by a group of specialized scholars from inside and outside NCTU. Every year, there are about 200 contributions, out of which only twenty odd articles will be published in the Review making the acceptance rate about 15% and quite a challenge for the contributors. Since December 2005, the Review  has been formally listed in the TSSCI (Taiwan Social Science Citation Index) as a local influential periodical in management. To be aligned with the international practice, the Review is expected to be converted into an English management journal in the future.
  2. To support NCTU to apply for patents in Mainland China
When applying for patents for their research results in Mainland China, the professors of NCTU feel perplexed about the chinese names of NCTU registered as the owners of the patents, and therefore, the Foundation has been entrusted to apply for patents under its name in Mainland China to solve the perplexity.
  3. To support the Alumni Association of NCTU to periodically publish the magazine – The Voice of NCTU Alumni which sent to the subscribers from alumni. For more information, please visit the website http://alumni-voice.nctu.edu.tw.
